READING GRADES K-5

 Tier 1 General Education Classroom for All Students

WPS Reading/Language Arts Curriculum

Grade K:   Read aloud, shared reading and writing, Fundations, Guided Reading, independent reading and writing, handwriting, phonemic awareness instruction, phonics instruction, and writers workshop.

Grade 1:    Read aloud, teacher modeling and mini lessons, shared reading and writing, Fundations, Guided Reading, independent reading and writing, phonological awareness, phonics instruction and spelling, writers workshop, ongoing assessment.

Grade 2:    Read aloud, teacher modeling and mini lessons, shared reading and writing, literacy discussion groups, Guided Reading, independent reading and writing, phonics instruction, word study, grammar, and writing mechanics, spelling and writer’s workshop and Fundations.

Grade 3:    Read aloud, teacher modeling and mini lessons, whole class and small group reading instruction, guided reading, literacy discussion groups, independent reading and writing, phonics instruction, word study, grammar, and writing mechanics, spelling, handwriting and writer’s workshop and Fundations.

Grade 4:    Read aloud, teacher modeling and mini lessons, whole class and small group reading instruction, guided reading, literacy discussion groups, independent reading and writing, phonics instruction, grammar, and writing mechanics, spelling, handwriting and writer’s workshop and Words Their Way.

Grade 5:    Read aloud, teacher modeling and mini lessons, whole class and small group reading instruction, guided reading, literacy discussion groups, independent reading and writing, phonics instruction, grammar, vocabulary, and writing mechanics, spelling, handwriting, opportunities to share reading and writing pieces and writer’s workshop and Words Their Way (Spelling).

(WPS Language Arts Curricula Grade K: 5 hours of instruction; Grades 1 & 2: 12.5 Hours of instruction; Grades 3-5: 10 hours of instruction)


Tier 1 Classroom Teacher Intervention

Programs, strategies, and procedures designed and employed to supplement, enhance, and support Tier 1.

  • Scientifically Research Based Interventions (SRBI) See Tier 1
  • Small group, differentiated Reading Instruction
  • ELL services
  • Home/school communication.

(20-30 minutes of instruction EVERY day)



Tier 2 Classroom Teacher Intervention

Plus Supplemental Services

  

Programs, strategies, or procedures designed and employed to supplement, enhance, and support tier 1.

  ( Minimum of 30 minutes five days out of six day rotation in small group in addition to the core instruction, supplemental to the classroom instruction.)


Tier 3 Supplemental Services

Revised programs, new strategies, or procedures designed and employed to supplement, enhance, and support tier 1.

  • For students identified with marked difficulties requiring increased frequency and duration of specialized services. Inpidualized plan designed by STAT.

(45-60 minutes of instruction five days out of 6 day rotation in a small group in addition to the core instruction. Student must maintain access to the general education curriculum.)
